Upper Valance finished in the L T area

Well today I managed to install the remaining upper valance in the L&T Branch area.  All that was left was to install a couple of metres along the staging section, add the rear bracing and install another fluorescent light.

All that remains now is to install the remaining fascia along the staging section, then time to paint...

Building the Docks part 6 Nearly finished

Hi Folks

Real life keeps getting in the way of the hobby, the work  (and more travelling) add in a heady mix of World Cup Rugby , a daughter learning to drive, and visiting universities for same said daughter and my project for BLAM has been seriously curtailed.

Enough of my complaining. Actually quite a lot has been completed since I last updated the blog on this project so here goes a short pictorial summary.

If you have been following this Blog you will know that once a year I meet with a group of like minded gamers from the Lead Adventure Forum for a weekend (3 days of beer and games). This year 30 souls descend on my local pub !!

My project this year was to build a 1930s Port - I plan to use this in my VBCW and Pulp games. I started back in June ( gosh that surprised me only 12 weeks ago !), and with the numbers turning up we are constrained to use tables no bigger than 4ft x 6ft.

I actually need to create 5 of these tables all painted blue for a big pirate game on the Sunday...more on this in another post

Onto this table I placed the dock boards I had created (se previous post) and these were rested on slabs of pink foam

The dockside walls were built using precut 9 mm MDF and topped with a ridge of thin wood stripping. These were painted black then dry brushed up greys and browns. The mooring posts are some old bits of timber and jenga pieces. They are quite weighty so will not move around too much.

I am quite pleased with the way these have turned out. The advantage is of course that I can reconfigure the shape of the dock in many ways.

So onto the buildings...one side of the docks is going to be an industrial refinery and factory

The storage tanks are £1 money boxes from Poundland sprayed green - these will be dirtied up. The pipework, valves etc are just 15mm plumbing stuff sourced from B&Q.  This all needs finishing. But you can see the work in progress.

The Bridge crossing the canal is a Warbases box girder bridge bought at Colours  - for £14 I was really pleased and wanted another. Alas it is no longer on their website so I have ordered a different one from Sarissa. There will be two bridges crossing the canal to aid playability.

You can see the finished factory and factory buildings from Sarissa behind the refinery. These are more or less finished.

The Canal separates the industrial zone from the warehouse area. I bought the barges ages ago off ebay - they are cheap tourist gifts.

The crane on the left is my impression of an old steam crane (its actually ripped off an old Hornby loco)

The warehouse area needs the most work - doors still need to be fitted to the buildings. Goods still have to be painted and other paraphernalia added.

The ship in the foreground is a trawler model bought on ebay - it came as a waterline model and is perfect for 28mm

The above photo gives a better shot of the refinery - the grey tank building came from Table Scape games (£18) - as did all those Oil Drums

The black crane (still to be painted) was originally a Thomas The Tank Cranky the Crane toy with a new arm added.

Damn just realised I need to finish this for next Monday - dress rehearsal for the Blam game and the fifth part of the Scales of Anubis campaign...maybe...

Well today I managed to finish installing the mezzanine flooring, the insulation and the last of the framework.

Insulation in and ready for the staging yard framework to go in...

Workbench area, Dispatch Area ready for benchwork and MDF walls...

Mezzanine storage area in and completed...

Looking into the existing JL&T Layout from the new workbench area and dispatch nook...

Wall cladding to go in, power points, and benchwork and all finished...

Sunrise Sunset is the mulch finished yet

While most gardens in colder climates sleep and gardeners stay snugly indoors, mild winters days will often find us in the garden.  During winter months our neighborhood is busy with tree trimming and we try to keep an eye out for tree services using a chipper.  Those chippers usually yield mulch free for the asking.  Its a win-win since the trimmers dont have to drive to the county brush drop-off and we dont even charge them to dump it in our driveway.

And so it was on Thursday afternoon we acquired a truckload of chipped oak mulch.

Friday morning early--a giant pile of steamy mulch waiting.

Friday was a beautiful day, near 70F predicted, so we got started right away distributing the mulch.  At first we piled it up in the pathways.  Mulch mostly goes on the paths to keep weeds down, and along the edges of the beds so Im not picky about the type of mulch which makes tree-trimmer mulch just fine.  Fresher mulch means less mold and dust too.

Our mostly lawnless, wooded lot requires a ton of mulch and then some.  This is the third truckload in the last few months and we could easily use more.

Tree trimming time is limited each year to prevent the spread of Oak Wilt.  The tree trimming window will draw to a close at the end of January and open again in July.  We are always careful to ensure source trees are not infected, as we did with this load.

Those green leaves will dry out and blend in quickly.

We spread the mulch right away so predicted rain wouldnt make it too heavy to work with later.  Bluebonnets and other wildflowers sprouting behind the fence.

The winter garden at sunset just before a cold front rolled in.  The next day was much colder and very windy so we mostly stayed indoors.

Before:  Its a good thing the backyard is downhill from here!

After:  Fifty wheelbarrow loads later (we always count them) just as the sun was setting over the garage and a front was turning the weather cold and windy.

 A good days work.

Here are the final photos of Ricks loading ramp.  I plan to put the whole project in a pdf booklet after I redraw the plans.  Will make a nice how-to project.

Wizdom:

1.  Taking good model photos takes a lot of time, effort and equipment.

2.  Take good notes when taking photos.  Document settings, lighting, all the details.

3.  Lighting is everything.  Invest in good lights, and plenty of them.?

I FINISHED!

Oh yes,

I finished my first full marathon.

26.2miles = 42Km

Let me tell you the inside story:

I hit the wall between mile 19-21 and curled up on the side of the road and cryed, in pain, cramping. 

Several times. 

Could barely walk. 

Then I got back up, put water on my face and licked my face off (yes, I sweat salt). 

Found some small bags of ice on the side of the road (thank you Jesus!), 

picked it up and iced my legs.

 So at mile 21 I pretended I was just going on a 5 mile run. 

My legs started to move again, 

I looked down at the line on the road and followed that to the finish line. 

Rock on! 

Still finished in 4hours and 32min

I did it.

I am now recovering, eating, drinking water and icing my legs for the rest of the day.

(and I got sunburned...wonderful memories)

Gate is Finished

I dont think there was enough work in mounting the gate to warrant video, so Ill just write the main points here.
The top hinge had to be raised by about 4 inches to line up with the crossledge on the gate. This is just mounted by four screws in to a mahogany stile.

I had to drill a one and a quarter inch hole through the gate and brace to mount the lock. Originally I was unsure whether a lock designed for indoor use would stand the test of time outdoors, but the lock is probably in its 10 or 11th year now and with just a couiple of squirts of WD40 now and again it is working fine.

On top of the door I have mounted a strip of 2x1 as a rain guard for water running on to the end grain. The wood is rebated on the bottom about three eights of an inch so it overlaps on each side.

I have also fitted a small hook and hasp latch at the top of the door as extra security if the lock is on latch. This is because we have two dogs and the kids are always leaving the gate open.

Prior to mounting the gate I left it soaking at each end overnight in Cuprinol 5 Star wood preserve. This soaked up inside the door and hopefully will provide years of protection. The rest of the gate has had a liberal brushing of the same.

Next stage is to colour the gate with a mid brown stain called fencelife. This will have to be repeated each year as the stain faids in sunlight.


I mentioned in my last video that I used a homemade door stand for planing and working on the gate. In my next post I will show some photos and instruction on how to make this handy tool.

Finished Blocking the layout for Detection

Well last night I finished the arduous task of adding insulators to the blocks for the detection rail on the layout.

I also took the time to remove a few turnouts (ElectroFrog to InsulFrog on the main) and remove a #8 turnout that was no longer required.  I also drilled a few holes for Tortoise rods that needed to be installed on some of the sidings.

Next step will be to test the track work as by adding the insulators I have created a few dead spots on the layout.  After that it will be onto adding the remaining Tortoise Switch Machines.

This was an interesting one to work on.I used a few photos of San Sebastian and decided what should be featured in the background. One this was established I did a few quick rough sketches in order to get the composition right. I went from 3 surfers in the original idea to just one.

Eventually its time to start layering the paint.

28mm Pulp Tramp Steamer Project Finished !

Ladies & Gentlemen

It gives me great pleasure to announce that the Steamer Katie Jane has finally left the dockyards !

Believe it or not I havent worked on this project since February of this year and everytime I enter the shed the dear old boat stares at me wanting its finishing touches.

So once the working week was done I decided to get this done - afterall the boat is integral to my dockside build and the game I am planning for BLAM in October.

So whats been added...

the ship needed its name plates....

The Air vents  - these were purchased online through a model boat builders - perfect for those pulp hideaways !

Stairs have been added to allow access to the bow and stern decks

I  have then added some masts - just simple dowel rods

 

and a flag (both made up on the computer and printed)

throw in some life-rings and the ship is complete.

I give you the Steamer Katie Jane...

The crew is mustered...

Oh and why the Katie Jane ? Well that is the name of my wife...she is chuffed to bits that the boat is named after her
